半年前のリリースなので、既に聞いている人は聞いているでしょうし、今更ここで書くこともないと思われるので、ホフマン掲示板から御大自らの投稿をご紹介。

The SHM SACD (which I will refer to as the "new" version so I don't have to keep on writing SHM SACD all the time). is a flat transfer from the tape, yes.

There is a problem with that though. Most (not all) of the original mixes NEED GOOD MASTERING and you don't get that here. You just get what the mixes sound like. SOME songs have a wicked and unneeded boost around 500 cycles. Why they did that back in the mix I do not know. But in order to make a good sounding master, that has to be reduced! Once it is, you're in business.

Is the new version worth all of this money? Not to me, I'd rather play my British first LP press. Can this new version be fixed with parametric EQ? Yes, it can, very nicely. But, why should you have to? I mean, really!

However, those that can fix by reducing to reg. digital, here ya go: Try reducing 3 db around 250 and work your way up to 1k until you find the spot that your ears don't feel like popping anymore. That will work for YOUR playback system. Try it on someone else's, you might have to move the EQ pressure point. There you have it.

Oh, DEAD FLOWERS and a few others do not have the lower mid/upper bass boost, play back straight. In fact, go listen to BITCH and then listen to DEAD FLOWERS. Hear the diff? BITCH has the boost, DEAD FLOWERS does not. How good is your playback? How big is the difference between the tonality of the two songs? If they sound like night and day or you can clearly hear the annoying boost on BITCH, you have a great system. That's your answer.

All that being said, this is my go-to digital version of STICKY FINGERS, with my EQ fix in place. For me, it's great 'cause I can muck with it until it's mastered nicely. Problem is, it's no longer an SACD, just a CD and that's a true bummer. Hopefully they will figure out how to master these releases to sound wonderful without over-mastering so we don't have to downsample to fix simple EQ problems that were ignored in DSD mastering.
